New Moon in Capricorn & the Astrology of 2022

Happy New Year dear friends! Bonne Année! ✨ ☮️ ✨

Welcome to the new energies of 2022! Thank you for joining me in this reflection on our first New Moon of the year as well as the astrology of the first half of 2022. Allow yourself to get comfortable and playfully embrace the fresh air and new light emerging in you and on the planet since the winter solstice of December 21. This is a great time for deep cleaning, smudging, decluttering, organizing, recycling, giving away or letting go of things that weigh you down. Start the year with a clean and bright space that inspires infinite new possibilities. You can take your time in setting goals and planning your year because Venus and Mercury will be retrograde for most of January. The first month of the year is all about rest, recalibration and replenishment for your body, mind, heart and soul.

How wonderful and auspicious that we have the Capricorn New Moon just a day after the New Year begins! Capricorn rules the spine and bones of our bodies. See and feel your body in a strong, flexible and new light. You can talk to your body, ask it what it needs and listen with a loving heart. The message that keeps coming to me for 2022 is anchoring and embodying peace, and that begins with taking great care of our bodies like a loving parent. “I love you body. I will take excellent care of you. Thank you for helping me to experience the wonders of being human”. Let’s simplify our lives and devote ourselves to becoming more conscious of what we are thinking, feeling and doing at all times.

One of the biggest themes in late 2021 and early 2022 is Venus retrograde in Capricorn from December 19 to January 29. During this time, she will transition from the Evening Star to be reborn as the Morning Star. Venus Retrograde is always an important cycle because it only happens every 19 months, the least often of any planet. Since Venus represents the inner Lover and Artist, and governs our attraction and personal magnetism, we are called to review what we are attracting with our frequency. Let's take the time to consciously align our frequency with our most cherished and authentic values. From a more metaphysical perspective, “Venus retrograde is a ceremony, by which the events unfolding in our inner and outer lives bring us to some transformation around Venusian themes: our values, relationships, money/resources, joy and pleasure.” (Sabrina Monarch Astrology)

As Venus retrogrades, she will dance with Pluto, Lord of the Underworld, and form 3 exact conjunctions. The first one occurred on December 11th, the second one on December 25th and the final one will be on March 3rd. These Venus-Pluto alignments are creating a tremendous opportunity to examine, heal and transform our relationship dynamics. We may (re)connect with a past feeling of betrayal from someone close to us or from various external authority figures. This new awareness can inspire us to strengthen our personal sovereignty. As Pluto/Hades represents death, rebirth and the deepest, darkest regions of the human psyche, we are called to bring a new light to our erotic nature, deepest intimacy, passion, vitality and sexuality. This is sacred work. I feel that Venus can help us to anchor a new frequency of wisdom and love as we journey downwards into the inner landscapes of our soul. Remember that Pluto literally means ‘riches’ or ‘treasures’. I am envisioning walking down a spiralling staircase and lighting a heart-shaped candle every few steps to illuminate the riches contained in the deep chambers of our psyche. When we reach the bottom, we can make a small fire, dance and rekindle a soul love that can warm our heart and spark a new love in the heart of Gaia and all of humanity.

Let’s come back to the New Moon in Capricorn, which is exact on January 2nd. Perhaps the most important geometric aspect in this New Moon sky involves Uranus forming a smooth flowing trine aspect with the Sun and Moon. Astrologers have talked a lot about Uranus in 2021; it is the planet of awakening, freedom, independence, innovation and revolution. We will still surf many changes in 2022, but the waves may not be as high or strong this year. In truth, we are navigating strong currents of structural change until 2024, when Pluto leaves Capricorn and enters Aquarius; however, we have learned to become better surfers since 2020, haven’t we? Uranus is helping us to break free from contraction to a higher consciousness and feel a greater sense of connection with the universe.

In climbing the peaks and valleys of life, we need to remember that there are always numerous paths over the mountains. There is never a ‘one size fits all’ in the human journey. Every person comes in to this world with a unique soul purpose and life path. As we journey through the mountains of Capricorn, take some time to reflect on your past and send love and gratitude for those experiences. Honour your unique strengths, and dedicate yourself to your true path with dignity, beauty, peace and love. Set your New Moon intentions with this loftier perspective to inspire you all year long.

In this New Moon chart, Jupiter is making a strong 90 degree square aspect to the South Node and North Node of the Moon. The Lunar Nodes represent cosmic portals to our collective past and future which are also poised to shift in a couple of weeks. With Jupiter and the Nodes all in mutable signs (Pisces, Gemini, Sagittarius), there is a whole lot of shifting going on! I can feel a great amount of change and mutability as we enter 2022. At its best, Jupiter in Pisces can infuse us with strong feelings of imagination, intuition, compassion and faith as we reimagine what our personal and collective lives can look like. What do you really, truly want to experience in life? All too often, we either don’t believe that our dreams are possible or give up in the early stages, not giving enough time to make them real.

Isn’t it time to passionately believe in the power and importance of our dreams? The world and humanity needs some new, empowered visions to fuel these next steps on our collective journeys. “Many of you have an all or nothing mentality, but we are here to tell you that small incremental steps create consistency, and from there anchor into true change that can bloom and grow. Infuse your life with what you want more of, even if it is the tiniest amount, and before you know it that energy becomes a part of you and you will have shifted out of it being a dream of how you would like to be one day into a natural expression of who you really are”. ~Archangel Gabriel through Shelley Young

The Lunar South Node/our collective past, will shift into Scorpio, while the North Node/our evolutionary future will shift into Taurus for 18 months, starting on January 18 this year. This Scorpio-Taurus polarity will be highlighted in the eclipses of 2022. With the South Node in Scorpio, we will feel called to acknowledge and release old emotional entanglements and attachments to loss, death and grief. With the North Node in Taurus, the path forward is about cultivating peace, stability and simplicity in order to build a deep and solid foundation. It will be radically important to honour our physical body and our planet, cultivating sensuality, pleasure and security, knowing that our understanding of money, resources and currency is evolving. In the words of intuitive Lee Harris, “the heart is the currency of the future for humanity.” What are your most fundamental resources?

On the same day as this New Moon, Mercury, messenger of the gods, will move out of Capricorn and ingress into the airy realms of Aquarius. What fascinating timing! From the elevated vantage points of the Sun and Moon in Capricorn, Mercury in Aquarius will help us to think differently, see new perspectives, options and possibilities, which will inspire us to set new goals that are aligned with our authentic life path. Mercury will also do its first retrograde dance of the year from January 14 to February 3, coming back into Capricorn for a few days from January 26 to February 14. As Mercury juggles both Capricorn and Aquarius during its retrograde, we will have the possibility to test out some new ideas and make practical adjustments as needed.

I believe that the most important astrological story of the year involves Jupiter, king of the gods in conjunction with Neptune in Pisces most of April! I am really looking forward to this incredibly expansive, mystical, luminous energy that can gift us with a greater sense of oneness and universal connection on the spiritual highways. This once in a lifetime event can remind us that we need a feeling of community and love as much as food and water. Jupiter and Neptune in Pisces is an invitation to weave spiritual practices into our daily routines instead of something we do only in times of despair. I think more and more people are going to experience a deeper spiritual faith and anchor a higher love in their hearts. We are invited to embody the ultimate truth that we are luminous, cosmic spiritual beings choosing to have a human experience.
