Reflections on the New Moon in Libra: On a Mission of Peace

Dear friends, Chers amis,

One of the most beautiful things about astrology is remembering that it is a sacred art and science. It is a synthesis of astronomy, geometry, psychology, sociology, shamanism, mythology, magic and spirituality. Astrology reminds us that we are connected to ever changing rhythms of the sky and the pulse of Life in an infinitely mysterious universe. Every now and then, we feel an impulse to look up at the sky for answers, reassurance and guidance. What are the stars communicating to us? Astrologers are like cosmic storytellers as they interpret these celestial cycles. Thank you for reading and listening.

The main characters in Friday’s New Moon involve the Sun & Moon in Libra, Mars in Aries, and Saturn & Pluto in Capricorn. These planetary energies formed a tight and stressful configuration called a T-Square. While I was contemplating this New Moon chart, I saw an image of a knight crossing a long bridge connecting two mountains. I invite you to add more details, colours and imagery as we go deeper into our understanding of this lunation picture.

Every month when the Moon completes her cycle and rejoins the Sun to form a New Moon, we are given a special opportunity to turn the page and begin a new chapter in the book of life possibilities. No one needs to be reminded that this year is a maelstrom of unparalleled intensity. Yet the urgency of the times is also pushing and inspiring humanity to tap deeper into a reservoir of power that exists within us. I like to believe that the Zodiacal and archetypal frequencies that live in our collective unconscious are all getting recalibrated and upgraded to support us in our great evolution. This month, the focus is on Libra.

Libra, the cosmic Scales, is a symbol of balance, justice, relationship, connection and harmony. Life on Earth this year has put tremendously heavy pressure on both sides of the Scales. The Libran part of our circuity has been feeling a lot of stress from trying to balance very polarized energies and make important decisions. As I mentioned in my last post, it is imperative that we devote more time and resources to take better care of our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual bodies. We really need an extra boost of Libra medicine at this time. Libra reminds us to be more conscious and appreciative of the amazing beauty that exists in nature and in human interaction. This supermoon has the potential to create some new energy and plant some new intentions in the ways that we interact with others and with ourselves and the world. The question is: what kind of new energy will we create? What kind of relationship do you want to create with your loved ones, friends, neighbours and others who live outside your bubble? Libra reminds us that we exist in partnership with all life. It just makes sense to enrich all of our relationships with a deeper sense of love and devotion when we realize that whatever we offer the world will always come back to us. This is the Law of attraction, giving and receiving, Yin and Yang. Often, what we see in others is a reflection of what we see in ourselves.

The combination of Libra with Aries and Capricorn suggests to me that we have a responsibility to shine a light of peace and love brighter than ever before. The inner Warrior must join forces with the inner Lover and express greater tolerance, patience and compromise. The more we can meet other people with an open mind, we initiate a genuine conversation that builds bridges of connection based on mutual trust and respect. We realize that there is more that unites us than separates us.

Authentic connection implies talking and even more importantly, listening. The act of conscious listening can improve all our relations and also create a deeper peace of mind, which is uber important for our mental health. “Whether listening to music, the sound of your breath, or the activities happening around you, it is the simple practice of listening that invites the mind to settle without trying to shut it down or tune it out. This is the heart of true rejuvenation.” (Matt Kahn)

Mars in the sign of Aries represents the archetypes of the great Hero that lives within us: the Warrior, Knight, Jedi, Soldier and Leader. In this lunation, the image of the knight came to me perhaps because it integrates the fierce courage of Aries, the grace of Libra and the noble honor of Capricorn. This part of the human psyche is vibrating strongly in the collective frequency of the planet, especially in the 2nd half of 2020. Since Mars is retrograde until November 13th, the cosmic Warrior is very close to Earth. We can now see the reddish hues of Mars very brightly in the sky as well as in the intense heat coming from devastating wild fires around the world, on the street and in cyberspace.

In this New Moon chart, the mythological Eris, goddess of Discord, is a powerful factor, conjunct Mars and opposite the Sun and Moon. As I understand Eris more, I felt it was time to share more about this new planet, which was discovered in 2005 and is becoming increasingly important, relevant and necessary in helping us to understand the spirit of the times we are in. “Sister of Mars, god of war, Eris is one who struggles against injustice and oppression. She has her war-like and even bloodthirsty side, with the higher manifestation of defending the weak and standing up for oneself. Her placement correlates to the archetype of the underdog warrior, speaking truth to power, and with also a willingness to resort to violence if necessary. Many manifestations of this archetype exist in the present culture. This archetype represents a dire motif of the struggle for survival that is inherent in the natural world, and in humankind also, and which represents once again, as with Pluto and Chiron, a darker side of our common humanity that must be acknowledged and faced in our time.” (Henry Seltzer, from TimePassages astrology software)

When conflicts or disagreements occur, all parties need to step back to a respectful distance and share their points of view with as much authenticity and respect as possible. When an intense disaster strikes, it also breaks down any barriers that separate us, such as culture, age, gender or status. This year Pluto, Lord of the Underworld, has erupted from the dark realms as Covid-19 and has spread fear and anxiety around the world. These are very difficult energies to navigate, but it is important to remember that despite the challenges, humanity is surviving, coping and adapting! I We are going to get through the blood, sweat and tears of 2020 and come out the other side stronger and more united than before.

The T-Square mentioned above is missing only one sign to complete a more complete connection between all the Cardinal signs and release the tension. Can you guess which one? If you guessed Cancer, you are correct! Cancer is the cosmic Mother of the Zodiac and the part of our instinctual nature that wants to nurture, nourish and take care of all our needs. There are so many healthy and destructive ways to soothe ourselves. So many of us are struggling without a strong support system. As conscious citizens of planet Earth, we are responsible for the well-being of all life, but it needs to start with radical self-care. We can enjoy a candle-lit bath, a cup of calming tea, sitting in a cozy chair, a lovely meal, and hugging as much as possible. We need to attend to the delicate garden of the world soul and plant seeds of safety and compassion for all beings as we begin the restructuring of the systems that govern society. “What can you do to love yourself into the new?” Archangel Gabriel, through Shelly Young.

Mercury is Retrograde from October 13 to November 3. Have no fear! The purpose of Mercury Retrograde is to slow down the pace of communication so that we can take the time to reflect on all that has been going on this year. Some people seem to experience more technical challenges than others during Mercury Retro periods. However, this is not the focus of Mercury, also known as the cosmic Trickster. We are invited to reflect on the ideas and thoughts that create the most emotional undercurrents in our psyche. Mercury is asking us to dive into the deepest recesses of our mind and re-discover the underlying or unconscious assumptions or thought patterns that guide our actions. I think it is perfect that Mercury is pushing us to do this important inner mental detective work at a very crucial stage in our evolutionary journey. This is an excellent time for doing some deep investigative journalling of our own psychological patterns.

During most of Mercury’s retrograde movement, it will be opposite Uranus in the sky. This means that our communication and thinking will be deep and quite unconventional. Some people may feel like their head is spinning too fast while others may have powerful intellectual breakthroughs. We may hear some shocking information or new truths suddenly revealed. Uranus is the planet of freedom and innovation. It is breaking down the conventional filters through which we express and receive knowledge.

Venus is opposite Neptune and they are both forming a square aspect to the Lunar Nodes. Venus symbolizes social love while Neptune represents a universal and compassionate love. We all need a whole lot of love to continue on this wild and crazy ride. “Love, safety, security, comfort, freedom, and acceptance. Ultimately all paths will lead people to the discovery of those desires, even if they take some detours first. At a collective level the vast majority of humans want the same things, and that is what will create the change you desire on your planet.” ~Archangel Gabriel through Shelley Young
